012014–2018

Senator for Montserrado County

In the 20 December 2014 Special Senatorial Election, George Weah won Montserrado County with 99,226 votes, representing 78.0 percent of valid votes recorded for the contest, according to the National Elections Commission.

022018–2024

President of the Republic of Liberia

Weah was inaugurated on 22 January 2018 after winning the 2017 presidential runoff with 61.54 percent of valid votes. His administration governed through the final withdrawal of UNMIL, the COVID-19 pandemic and a period of significant economic and infrastructure challenges.

A Peaceful Transfer of Power

On 17 November 2023, with the runoff count showing an insurmountable lead for Joseph Boakai, President Weah publicly conceded and called for respect for the democratic process. The European Union Election Observation Mission later said the timely concession significantly contributed to the peaceful transfer of power.

An Active Former President

Since leaving office in January 2024, Weah has remained active in public life through political, civic and international engagements. In July 2026 he publicly declared his intention to contest Liberia's 2029 presidential election.

Digital Financial Inclusion and Payments Reforms

Regulatory reforms during the administration expanded the framework for digital financial services, including amendments to the Payments Act, digital-credit rules and consumer-protection measures.
